Q&A with Amsterdog

Introduce yourself and tell us a little about your rescue group?

I am Deb DiIorio and I am very lucky to have a fabulous group of women working with me who are devoted to helping homeless dogs get out of the shelter, or be prevented from being dumped in the shelter and finding them wonderful homes. There is a home out there for every single dog, and if we had the time and shelter space and funding, NYC could easily become No-Kill. We all work together and our motto is “It takes a village” because it really does.

When did you start saving animals and why?

We tried helping animals in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and brought some of the ones who had no hope up here to NYC, and then it became apparent to me that there was such a great need for NYC shelters. Prior to that, I was convinced that New York City did not ever put down animals. (DUH!)

What is your favorite animal?

Or what is your favorite kind of dog? And why? We love all breeds, but are partial to Pit Bull Terriers, because they are so misunderstood by the general population and in truth, they are just the sweetest most lovable passionate fun-loving dogs! But honestly, we will save any breed and any type of animal.

Do you have any pets?

Yes, Angie & Angelo, both rescued from ACC of NYC.

What is your favorite part of animal rescue?

Seeing the smiling faces of dogs who were once going to be put down and now are in happy homes. And seeing the faces of the adopters too. Some of them tell us it’s the best thing they ever did, to adopt a shelter dog.

If someone wanted to get involved in animal rescue, what would you suggest to them?

Run! Seriously, just talk to as many people in rescue as possible and try and learn as much as you can. Help out in different ways and learn the best ways to read an application, assess what dogs are best for what homes, etc.

What is the hardest part of rescuing animals?

Not having enough homes for all the dogs being killed, not having enough time and people to help….it sometimes feels like there is so much more heartache than rewards, but we have to focus on all the good things, otherwise, we would go crazy.

What motivates you to continue your life saving work?

The amazing feeling that a life has been saved and knowing the good it creates for the adopters too.

What do you do in your free time?

What is “free time”? HAHAHA I love to create new vegan recipes and try them out on my carnivore friends.

Can you tell us one thing about yourself that we wouldn’t be able to guess?

I am an ordained minister and can legally marry people and love to help them to create their own ceremonies.
